Recommendations For A Successful Mold Clean-Up

by Bernard Jennings

Water is an essential element in sustaining life, but when it gets out of control in your home and leads to moisture damage and mold growth, the results can be effectively dangerous to your health. Mold growth within your home can cause toxic levels of mold spores to collect in the air where you will breathe it and it will cause health problems ranging from headaches, nausea, and confusion to respiratory problems and even death. To help you combat these serious problems, here are some recommendations to help you successfully clean up after a mold growth problem inside your home.

Eliminate the Moisture Intrusion

One of the first steps in cleaning up after a mold growth problem is to get rid of the moisture that has originally caused the growth to occur. Whether the moisture was from a humid environment in your bathroom or a leak under the kitchen sink or down into the roof attic space, you will need to repair the problem and eliminate the excess moisture.

If you are dealing with excessive humidity in your bathroom that has caused mold to grow on the walls, tiles, or flooring, you need to ventilate the area well in the future to prevent future problems. Turn on the room ventilation or install a dehumidifier to remove moisture from the air and squeegee off shower and tub walls to keep the surfaces dry.

For a moisture leak, find out where the moisture is coming from, whether it is from a leaky pipe or from a leak in your roof, and fix the issue. Hire a professional roofer to investigate a leak in your roof so all areas of the problem can be discovered and cleaned up and repaired.

For example, if there is a roof leak that has soaked into the attic, be sure all the insulation, drywall, trusses, and roofing deck are cleaned of mold and moisture damage, then replaced to prevent future problems with mold spores through your home. If any mold spores are left behind after a water leak, they will continue to grow and put spores into the air of your home, leading to further mold growth and health and respiratory issues in your household members.

Use an Effective Cleaner

There are two great cleaners you can use to eliminate mold growth in your home, which includes bleach and vinegar. However, bleach is such a harsh cleaner that will only strip the surface membrane of mold, it can allow mold to grow back stronger. And because bleach is a surface cleaner, the mold will grow into the pores of surfaces where the bleach won't reach it and it can grow back soon after.

A good alternative to bleach is white vinegar used undiluted in your clean-up process. Be sure to saturate any mold growth with white vinegar to prevent spores from getting into the air. It is recommended to leave the vinegar on the mold for at least an hour to kill the spores, then wipe up the area with a disposable cloth. Follow this up with a reapplication of vinegar and allow it to saturate the surface if any mold spores remain, scrubbing it with a scrub brush.
