Having gone through a couple of significant losses in my own life, I know how debilitating loss can be. Yet, as I’ve grown and matured, not so much in age and experience but in the ways of God, I am beginning to see and understand how the pain and heartache of loss, that any loss, can be healed and used by God to expand my soul and grow and strengthen me as person. Not so I'll take great pride in myself am for having dealt with my losses and overcame them, for how sad would that be, if that were all I had to show for the losses in my life. No, when God expands our soul, grows, and fortifies us, in the midst of the hurt in our life, its so our Heavenly Father can show us a life that is larger than us; showing that even in this fallen world of sin, death and loss, He's still ready to accomplish His will and His perfect plan for each of us.
Eight Chapter of Romans Verse 28:
“We are assured and know that [God being a partner in their labor] all things work together and are [fitting into a plan] for good to and for those who love God and are called according to His purpose.”
Many times when people are in the depth of their pain because of the loss they have suffered, their attitude is to deny their loss, to the point of anger at somebody sharing the truth of God's Word with them, believing it callous, insensitive or too preachy. Learning to know when it is the best time for things like this is crucial, not revealing the truth and great hope of the guarantees of God shows a great absence of compassion and love, for ultimately nothing aside from God’s power and His love will set someone free to get past and flourish following a devastating loss.
It is that incapacity to move on that is the subject of what I am penning. There would not be any need to discuss moving on from loss if our loss did not have such incredible force to just keep us where we are, almost frozen in time, living life only in the past, as if today or tomorrow doe not matter.
There is understandably, a place and a time to mourn. Not facing your loss and permitting yourself to feel the discomfort and misery of it, will result in all sorts of additional physical and emotional issues down the road. Loss requires healthy grief for healing, bringing healing to your pain takes time. But that time is not designed to last for all time. Cherishing memories and special feelings for a lost loved one is certainly crucial. Recollecting special or joyful times in your life are good and healthy. Even sadness at times as you feel the emptiness or face the changes loss has left you with, is good and acceptable but a lifetime of mourning is not!
Lamentations three, the verse says there is a time and a season for every thing and for every purpose under heaven, including a time to weep:
A time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance.
If we choose to not move from a unending place of grief and sorrow, we are going to miss all the best things your Heavenly Father has laid out and planned for you, which could be a tremendous loss, one beyond your comprehension. Our loving God revels in restoring and healing for each individual who calls on Him. God does not intend for us to go thru this life injured and crippled in our spirit or our body as a result of the pain in our life we have endured. He desires to cure us for our sake and for His glory and purposes. He's your God of a new start in life, wanting to be in your life, demonstrating His power and His love to a dying world.
Isaiah 43 : 18-19 ( NASB )
Do not call to mind the previous things, or ponder things of the past. Behold, I'll do something new. Now it will spring forth; will you not be aware of it?
He wants for us to journey with Him and enjoy the things He is accomplishing, but we can not if we've shut our self off from what He offers, we are certain to spend the remainder of our lives feeling sorry for ourselves.
One of the most negative decisions someone can make soon after loosing a loved one especially that of a better half of a daughter or son or even after a divorce - is that they will never let themselves fall in love again. In their mind it would be to open themselves up to that very same devastating agony again and what person thinking correctly would do that? But to make a choice like that is to ensure that one is likely to miss more of the awesome things God still has planned for them.
A Grace Disguised, a wonderful book; writer Gerald Sittser, who lost his mother, his wife and a daughter in an auto crash talks about this very issue.
“The risk of further loss, therefore, poses a dilemma. The problem of choosing to love again is that the choice to love means living under the constant threat of further loss. But the problem of choosing not to love is that the choice to turn from love means imperiling the soul, for the soul thrives in an environment of love. Soul-full people love; soul-less people do not. If people want their soul to grow through loss, whatever the loss is, they must eventually decide to love even more deeply than they did before. They must respond to the loss by embracing love with renewed energy and commitment.”
Expanding our heart to love again after loss can be a mysterious part of the way God uses to heal us. We can refuse His healing if we choose and withdraw to protect our heart, leading to a reduced soul and a very lonely way to spend the rest of our life. It would be easy to walk away from love because the risk of loss is simply too great. Yes, most likely another loss could happen yet God's love and His power is even more certain to cure you. It does take some bravery for us to live again and it takes His power to love continually. With Our Lord God, it means a fresh start and why you need to move on while relying on God's power and not your own!
