Phil Harris Is An Old-Time Radio Legend

The Phil Harris-Alice Faye Show was the show that made Phil Harris a household name in old time radio.

Phil grew up in Nashville, TN and was born in Indiana. In the 1920s he began his career as a drummer, which later led to the development of his own band in the 1930s.

His career also spanned the film industry. So This is Harris is a film that he made for RKO in 1933. The film garnered success after it won an Academy Award.

A few years later, in 1936, Harris became the musical director for the Jack Benny Show. The band had him as their lead and he also sang. He was not just restricted to musical roles, as he had a speaking part as a funny character from the South. Eventually, he became well-known for his musical and comedy roles. At the same time he began recording swing tunes with unusual arrangements that made his music really stand out from the crowd.

His marriage to Alice Faye began from 1941, and he would remain married to her for over 50 years. Even though this was not their first marriage, this second marriage with each other was the perfect one. The couple was invited to play on the Fitch Bandwagon and did so.

While the show was originally developed to highlight all kinds of swing bands, Phil and Alice became immediate fan favorites and eventually their popularity led to the show morphing into the Phil Harris-Alice Faye Show.

The show became a comedy and the show order meant that the couple would perform a song together for each episode. The show was incredibly popular and ran for six years. In 1954 it aired the last episode. At this time old time radio shows were becoming obsolete and the television age was dawning.

As a musician, he kept with his musical career upbringing. He made television appearances and did voiceover work including the voices of Disney characters Baloo in the Jungle Book, Thomas O'Malley in the Aristocats, and Little John in Robinhood.

Later on in his life, Harris gave back to the communities in which he grew up, with donations to students of Linton (his hometown) and Palm Springs, where he spent much time as a young adult. To this day, his donation of memorabilia to the Linton Public Library has been maintained as a piece of history. He had a heart attack at the age of 91, and passed away in 1995. Wife Alice Faye would survive him for another 3 years.
