Old Radio Shows For The 21st Century
The 1930's-1950's was the Golden Age Of Radio. There were decent radio classics on every night that you could huddle round the fire to and be thrilled by, Suspense, Escape, Inner Sanctum and The Whilster are just a few of these. It is no surprise that this became known as the Golden Age of Radio.
By time the 1960's came around these old time radio shows died out. It wasn't a sudden death. It was more a slow, but inevitable decline that lasted from the early 1950s through to 1962 when the last episode of Yours Truly Johnny Dollar was broadcast.
There was a brief comeback in the 70s and 80s when Himan Brown's CBS Radio Mystery Theatre ran from 1972-1982. Since then however radio has not been the same.
There is however one show that did stand out above the others called "Tales from the Morgue".
This is a show where an elderly morgue attendant sells a series of short stories.
These stories always seem to be strange. Many of them are SCI-FI or supernatural. Some of the stories seem outrageous but this is the whole point.
About half of these shows include a character call Elmer who always seems to find himself in some interesting situations.
The show can be considered as rather off-beat and even the writer admit the stories are humours and there are may recurring characters which listeners enjoy.
This series was created and produced by M&J Audio Theater. The M standing for Mark Sawyer and the J for J Reel.
These are friends who met at school in 1977. Thanks to old time radio shows such as X Minus One, Lum and Abner, and Gunsmoke, they had a mutual interest in radio drama. One can hear these influences in every story from the subject matter and the character voices, to the plots.Thins about the show such as the opening to the show, the host's humorous manner and the happy endings relate very closely to "The Inner Sanctum" and Himan Brown.
Mark Sawyer and J Reel collaborated on as many as 20 characters in these stories, possibly more. Jay is the main voice and did the voice of Chet Chetter, Elmer Korn. The Sheriff Roland and Hale Headrush Tayor. Mark only admits to being the voice of Cecil Farris and various incidental characters.
In 1989 the first Chet Chetter story was produced my Mark and Jay, it was called "The Highway of Death". Between 1980 to 1995 95 episodes were recorded. They call it "The Conofrof Saga".
Once National Public Radio had seen "The Highway of Deadth" after they had submitted it they ordered 3 more stories to be written which surprised Mark and Jay. NPR Playhouse accepted and broadcast there 4 stories in 1990. These shows went down so well that NPR requested 9 more episodes be written for the following year! All 13 episodes were played in 1992 as a full series.
A few online production houses are finding an audience for their own audio shows since then.
